There are some newborn sessions that stay with you forever.

As a Portland newborn photographer, I’ve had the privilege of documenting many growing families over the years. When this sweet family reached out to tell me they were expecting twin boys, I was beyond excited. I had photographed their first baby years earlier, and it felt incredibly special to be part of another chapter of their story.

But shortly after, I received heartbreaking news.

One of the twins had passed and was delivered early. Baby B, however, continued to grow strong and healthy.

I remember sitting quietly for several moments after reading the message, trying to process the weight of it all. As a photographer, a mother, and simply another human being, I knew this session would carry a very different meaning. There are no perfect words for moments like these—only compassion, empathy, and presence.

This newborn session became more than portraits.

It became a way to honor both babies.

A Newborn Session Filled With Love, Grief, and Strength

During emotional newborn photography sessions like this, my goal is never just to create beautiful images. It’s to preserve connection, emotion, and memory in the most meaningful and respectful way possible.

This family carried both grief and gratitude at the same time. While mourning one son, they were also celebrating the incredible resilience and life of Baby B.

As photographers, we often witness some of life’s most joyful moments. But occasionally, we are trusted with documenting moments that exist between joy and heartbreak. Those sessions leave a permanent imprint on our hearts.

This family’s story reminded me once again how fragile and beautiful life truly is.
