Top 5 Tips for a Studio Maternity Session in Portland, OR

Pregnancy is such a beautiful and fleeting chapter of life—one that deserves to be documented with care and creativity. As a Portland-based studio maternity photographer, I work with expecting mothers to create timeless, elegant portraits in a comfortable indoor setting. Whether this is your first maternity session or your last, here are my top five tips to help you prepare for a stunning studio experience.

1. Schedule Your Session at the Right Time

The ideal time for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks. During this window, your baby bump is beautifully round, and you’ll likely still feel comfortable enough to pose and move freely. Every pregnancy is unique, so if you're unsure, I’m happy to help you pick a session date that works best for your body and your comfort.

2. Choose Outfits That Highlight Your Bump

Your outfit plays a huge role in how your images turn out. I always recommend fitted dresses, lace gowns, or flowing fabrics that accentuate your bump without hiding it. Our studio includes a curated client wardrobe with a range of flattering maternity gowns, or you're welcome to bring your own special pieces. Solid colors, soft textures, and timeless silhouettes always photograph beautifully.

Bonus tip: Avoid logos or busy patterns—they can distract from your natural beauty.

3. Get Pampered and Perfect Your Look

For the most polished, magazine-ready images, I highly recommend investing in professional hair and makeup. A professional artist knows how to apply makeup that looks amazing on camera, ensuring you look radiant and flawless under the studio lights. This is your moment to be pampered! Feel free to arrive at the studio with your hair and makeup done as part of your luxury experience.

4. Bring Something Meaningful

Personal touches can make your session even more special. Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, consider bringing items like:

  • A sonogram photo

  • Baby shoes or onesies

  • A meaningful heirloom or jewelry

  • Your partner or older child for a few family shots

These details help tell your story and create more emotional, authentic images.

5. Trust the Process (and Your Photographer)

It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous in front of the camera—especially during pregnancy. That’s why I guide you every step of the way: from posing to expressions to styling. You don’t need to know how to “model.” I’ll help you look and feel amazing with poses that flatter your body and highlight the connection you already have with your baby.
