Growing Together: A Beautiful Sibling & Newborn Session in Portland

There is a unique kind of magic that happens when a family returns to my studio with their second child. A few years ago, I had the honor of documenting big brother Jack as a newborn. Recently, this wonderful family returned to my West Linn portrait studio to introduce me to their beautiful new addition, baby sister Amelia.

Seeing the family unit become "complete" is one of the greatest joys of my career. It was absolutely darling to see Jack again and watch how incredibly gentle, sweet, and proud he was with his new baby sister. Getting to grow alongside a family in this way is incredibly special to me—by the time the second session rolls around, I truly feel like one of their aunties!

The Art of the Sibling and Newborn Photo Shoot

Photographing a newborn alongside a toddler can feel daunting for parents, but a patient, baby-led approach always yields the most breathtaking results. At SunnyMelon Photography, my goal is to strip away complex props and busy backdrops so that the organic, natural connection between siblings can take center stage.

How we create a stress-free sibling newborn session:

  • Toddler-First Workflow: We always prioritize the sibling portraits at the very beginning of the session while the older child’s energy and curiosity are at their peak.

  • Candid Interaction: Rather than forcing stiff, unnatural poses, we encourage gentle touches, soft kisses, and quiet moments of looking at the baby. This results in authentic emotional art.

  • A Welcoming Studio Environment: My temperature-controlled West Linn studio is a safe, calm sanctuary designed to let toddlers relax, play, and take breaks whenever they need them.

Building a Cohesive Visual Legacy

When you establish a long-term relationship with a Portland newborn family photographer, your family archives benefit from a beautiful, consistent aesthetic. Amelia’s portrait gallery was designed to perfectly match the soft tones, directional studio lighting, and modern, minimalist style of Jack’s original newborn photos.

When these images are printed side-by-side in a custom heirloom linen album or displayed as custom framed wall art in their home, the visual storytelling is completely seamless.

Planning Your Growing Family Session

If you are expecting your second or third child, the ideal time to reserve your newborn session is during your second trimester. We will plan a customized experience that celebrates both your newest miracle and the beautiful children who paved the way.
