Modern Maternity Photography: Capturing Timeless Elegance

It was an absolute honor to be chosen as the photographer for Jocelyn Jasso’s stunning maternity session. As Jocelynemuaa, she is Portland's premiere make-up artist. Collaboration with such a skilled professional is key to achieving a truly remarkable final product. Jocelyn Jasso looked radiant, and our session was guided by a beautiful request: to utilize neutral tones that would perfectly compliment her natural skin tone.

For me, the goal of modern maternity photography is to strike a delicate balance. It is incredibly important to simultaneously maintain an ethereal, dreamy feel and achieve a high-fashion, magazine-quality look. These two elements—the timeless and the contemporary—complement each other flawlessly, elevating the maternity portrait into a piece of fine art. The soft, neutral palette we chose ensured a focus on Jocelyn's maternal glow while creating images that will remain stylish for decades to come.

Among my preferred techniques for these sessions are fabric maternity tosses. They remain my absolute favorite element to incorporate for every mother. The flowing fabric is inherently timeless and exudes an undeniable elegance, adding beautiful movement and dynamic visual interest to the composition. Watching the fabric cascade and billow around the mother creates a sense of drama and serenity that beautifully symbolizes the journey of pregnancy. Ultimately, every detail, from the makeup application to the choice of props and lighting, is designed to ensure our mothers feel absolutely beautiful, comfortable, and celebrated throughout their entire professional photography session.
