From Firstborn to Sibling: A Returning Family's Newborn Portrait Progression in Portland, OR

There is no greater compliment for a photographer than seeing clients return to document the next big milestone in their family's story. When a family chooses us to capture their second, third, or fourth baby, it signifies more than just a successful photoshoot—it means we have become a trusted part of their journey.

I met this family 2 years ago with their first born son—August. We captured all those tiny, fleeting newborn details, preserving the quiet peace of their new family of three.

Two Years, Two Babies: Documenting the Progression

Now fast forward some time—I hear news they are expecting a new member to the clan. A baby girl! I love when clients keep me connected in their journey. I feel like a part of me is given to the session whenever that happens. Like a self-proclaimed Aunt (haha).

Documenting a family's progression is an incredible privilege. It allows us to create cohesive wall art and albums that tell a complete story. We intentionally coordinate colors and styles between sessions so that two babies photographed two years apart look like they belong together, creating true heirloom pieces for their home.

Capturing Sibling Dynamics

Adding a new baby changes everything, and capturing the older sibling's reaction is priceless. Big brother was curious and the idea of a new baby hasn't yet "sunk" in yet. I live for these moments!

Newborn sessions with a toddler require patience and a careful plan. We focus on getting the most important shots—like the gentle cheek-to-cheek pose—right away. We understand that a two-year-old might be hesitant or excited, and we work quickly to capture their initial interaction. Their curiosity, their occasional lack of understanding, and their overwhelming but clumsy affection are all part of the real-life story. These images often end up being the most cherished, as they genuinely reflect the start of the sibling bond.

Custom Styling: Springtime & New Approaches

To make this baby girl’s session unique, I planned a beautiful, custom setup. I made a cute Easter setup and some other new approaches too. Incorporating seasonal elements like soft pastels, tiny floral accents, and springtime props ensures the gallery is visually stunning while still feeling timeless. Every baby is unique, and every session is custom-designed to reflect that.
