From Newborn to One Year: Vivienne’s First Birthday Milestone Session

A first birthday milestone collage of a baby girl in a lace romper and floral headband. She sits in a white vintage crib prop against a cream backdrop with a peach balloon arch and fairy lights.

There is nothing quite as rewarding as watching a family grow over their baby’s first year. Back in 2022, I had the privilege of capturing sweet Vivienne as a tiny, sleepy newborn. Recently, she returned to my West Linn portrait studio to celebrate her first birthday, and she has truly grown into the cutest, smile-filled little doll!

For Vivienne’s milestone portraits, her mother had a beautiful and very specific request: she wanted to maintain a similar color palette and tonal aesthetic to her 2022 newborn shoot. This intentional approach ensures that her first-birthday portraits will perfectly complement the existing custom wall art in their home.

The Power of a Cohesive Year-One Gallery

When planning a baby’s first-birthday photoshoot, it’s easy to get swept up in trendy, colorful themes. However, leaning into a timeless, minimalist aesthetic allows you to tell a seamless visual story of your baby's first year.

Why we matched Vivienne's first birthday tones to her newborn session:

  • Designed for Home Decor: By using consistent, neutral tones across sessions, the images look beautifully cohesive when displayed side-by-side on a family gallery wall.

  • Focus on Growth: When the backdrop, lighting, and wardrobe remain classic and uncluttered, the focus shifts entirely to how much your baby has changed—from a curling newborn to a sitting, laughing one-year-old.

  • Timeless Sophistication: Neutral textures and sophisticated tones never go out of style, ensuring your luxury heirloom albums look stunning for decades to come.

Playing Dress-Up in the Studio Wardrobe

To bring this elegant vision to life, we unlocked the SunnyMelon studio wardrobe collection. We spent the morning playing dress-up, selecting delicate, high-end knits and rompers that matched the organic, soft tones of her original newborn portraits.

Vivienne was an absolute natural in front of the camera, flashing gummy smiles and showing off her blooming personality. (Honestly, she was so sweet I wished I could keep her in the studio!).
